Römersteinbruch St. Margarethen - Die Zauberflöte

In the 2019 season, the Magic Flute is one of the most popular operas on the program. The premiere is on July 10 on one of the most impressive open-air stages in Europe. The rugged rock landscape of the quarry offers the breathtaking and fairy-tale setting for Mozart's parable on love and reason.

Prince Tamino is sent by the Queen of the Night to rescue her daughter Pamina, who was kidnapped by Sarastro. He is accompanied by the bird catcher Papageno. Tamino receives a Magic Flute, Papageno a magical carillon to tame wild animals, pass exams and solve puzzles. Who will be victorious - night or day? Good or evil? In the end, love alone will be the winner. The prince and princess find each other, go through fire and water together, and the bird catcher is allowed to embrace his "beloved little dove".

More than 200 years after its premiere in Vienna, Mozart's masterpiece fascinates young and old, allowing viewers to reflect, cheer and indulge in an indescribable wealth of melodies. Volkstheater always wanted to be "The Magic Flute", in the best and truest sense of the word, and genuine folk music has become a major musical theme: Papageno's bird-catcher song, Tamino's dreamy-intimate contemplation of the "enchantingly beautiful portrait" or Paminas's shadowy melancholy "Oh, I feel it ". The virtuoso coloraturas of the Queen of the Night, in particular, threw the audience into applause then and now, and to many an inveterate opera fan they are the earliest memories of the passionate enthusiasm that the opera still and time and again triggers.
