Der Mann von La Mancha

The world premiere of „Man of la Mancha“ took place on Broadway on 22nd November 1965. The
story about the bewildered Spanish knight who battles against windmills ran for a record number of 2300 performances. „Man of la Mancha“ was first performed at the Volksoper in 1994 with Robert Meyer in the role of Sancho. Now the production, directed by Olivier Tambosi, returns with Meyer playing the “Knight of the Sad Countenance”.

"The Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum is America's most famous fairy tale, which gained cult status worldwide through the film adaptation with the young Judy Garland (1939). The best-known song from it, "Over the Rainbow" by Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg, was awarded the Oscar in 1940. The stage adaptation of the masterpiece in the production of Henry Mason and in the stage design of Jan Maier also became an audience hit for the whole family at the Volksoper.

Leonard Bernstein composed the musical in 1953 as a lively homage to New York. The turbulent Greenwich Village always served as inspiration for the musical universal genius. Two Ohio sisters try to navigate the turbulent life of the Big Apple. The younger, Eileen, is preoccupied with devotees, while the rude Ruth tries unsuccessfully to place her literary works with a magazine. The European premiere of the piece took place in 1956 at the Volksoper. Now, 100 years after the birth of Leonard Bernstein, she is presenting a new production.

Sweet Charity

Broadway icon Bob Fosse developed the vision in the mid-1960s to form an American musical from a film by Federico Fellini. Fellini's "The Nights of the Cabiria" thus became the musical "Sweet Charity" - not without appropriate editing. A project for which Fosse won on the one hand none other than the popular playwright Neil Simon and on the other hand the composer Cy Coleman, who until then had been relatively unnoticed. Its colorful and stirring score, which oscillates between classic Broadway sound, jazz, gospel and early pop, is still a happy hand to legend Fosse.
