What exactly is taught here? »La scuola degli amanti«, »The School of Lovers«, is the subtitle of Lorenzo Da Ponte's libretto (the poet originally intended it to be the actual main title). The goal of Don Alfonso, the "old philosopher", is primarily the loss of all illusions about love and loyalty. On the way there, the lovers are taught all the main and subsidiary subjects of a complicated (love) life: trust, seduction, deception, devotion. The conclusion at the end, the eponymous »That’s how everyone (women) do it«, does not have to be seen as the end of the training: what they do with this supposed knowledge is rather a question for everyone involved.
