La traviata

Melodrama in three acts libretto by Francesco Maria Piave

Premiering October 2, 2022

In Italian with German and English surtitles

»La traviata« – directly translated »The one who has lost her way«, says the Parisian courtesan Violetta Valéry, who, already doomed to die from a lung disease, falls in love with Alfredo Germont against her way of life and all reason and in her urge for freedom and happiness ultimately fails because of bourgeois moral concepts. When it premiered in Venice in 1853, this story provoked a scandal: an opera about a courtesan who dies of tuberculosis and is also based on a real woman from Parisian society was an unprecedented innovation for the time. Focused on the triangular relationship between Violetta, her lover Alfredo and his father, Verdi created a character, above all with the figure of Violetta, whose emotional spectrum fascinates the audience between lyrical bel canto passages and overwhelming musico-dramatic outbursts. Director Barbora Horáková Joly tells »La traviata« in the dazzling world of 19th century variety shows.
