The title character Káťa Kabanová in Leoš Janáček's opera of the same name suffers greatly in her marriage to Boris. The fire of passionate love has long since been extinguished, because the marriage of convenience arranged by Boris' despotic mother primarily serves to secure the future of the traditional merchant family. Boris breaks out, loves another woman and Káťa breaks free from the toxic family situation and meets another man. But the feelings of guilt over their brief affair won't let go.
As is so often the case, the Czech composer Leoš Janáček (1854–1928) wrote the libretto himself. He used the five-act drama "Thunderstorm" by the Russian writer Alexander Ostrovsky from the 19th century as a model. In contrast to the play, Janáček dispenses with socio-historical details, instead focusing on people and their relationships with one another. In »Káťa Kabanová«, premiered in Brno in 1921, Janáček once again succeeded in using his multi-layered score to create a very intimate musical language in which the orchestra sensitively expresses the emotional states of the protagonists.
