"A man like you," Papageno answers when Tamino asks who he is. When asked in return, Tamino replies that he comes from »princely blood«. So it becomes clear right from the start that the bird catcher Papageno is already what Tamino has yet to become: a human being. So humanity is the goal. And no matter how noble the goal, the way there is humorous, human and playful. The libretto describes him with many trials, with hell revenge and the sweetest love, with dancing animals and wondrous boys until Tamino and Pagageno finally happily reach their destination. »The Magic Flute«, premiered in Vienna in 1791 as the last opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, stands on the one hand entirely in the tradition of the old Viennese magic theatre. On the other hand, Mozart and his librettist Emanuel Schikaneder were also inspired by the Enlightenment ideas of the Freemasons; and thus created a mixture of Punch and Judy nonsense and Freemason profundity, untimely misogyny and deepest humanity with simply heavenly music, which made »The Magic Flute« the cross-generational success opera that it is today.
