The Flying Dutchman

Romantic opera in three acts libretto by the composer
In German with German and English surtitles
No break

Countless legends surround the figure of the flying Dutchman, cursed to eternal wandering, who only finds peace when a woman remains faithful to him until death. Senta, who is heading towards a hopeless fate as a housewife and mother in her village home, believes she is destined to break the curse. Or is she hoping for the stranger to free her from the confines of her life? First performed in Dresden in 1843, “The Flying Dutchman” is Richard Wagner's first romantic opera. In her production, director Florentine Klepper takes Senta's perspective and, in a magical dream play, tells of her emancipation from her father, fiancé and the social conventions that stifle her.
