Gustav Mahler
Symphony No. 8

»Here it will be event«

When Mahler's Eighth was on the Staatskapelle's program for the first time, the concert had a special aura: on June 30, 1932, nine months before his expulsion, Fritz Busch conducted the late Romantic's opus ultimum. Mahler described the combination of the Whitsun hymn »Veni, creator spiritus« with the finale »Faust II« euphorically: »It is the greatest thing I have done. Imagine that the universe is beginning to sound.« Visitors to the premiere on September 12, 1910 in Munich with 1030 participants reported the overwhelming effect of the »Symphony of a Thousand« (as the publisher soon called the work). Nothing has changed to this day.

Introduction to the concert 45 minutes before the start in the opera cellar of the Semperoper.
