Musical drama in one act Libretto by the composer based on Oscar Wilde's poem of the same name in a German translation by Hedwig Lachmann

Premiere September 24, 2016

In German with German and English surtitles

The premiere of Richard Strauss’ “Salome” on December 9, 1905 in the Semperoper is a milestone in 20th century opera. Like no composer before him, Strauss brings the turn-of-the-century attitude to life, decadence, psychological over-refinement, uninhibited and destructive sexuality to an opera stage - and overwhelms the listener with his intoxicating and sometimes brutal sound worlds, as if composed for the sound of the Saxon State Orchestra. The focus of the one-act play is not a Germanic myth like in the German operas that followed Wagner, but a biblical-oriental story: the Judean princess Salome is bored at the court of King Herod. The preaching voice of the imprisoned prophet Jokanaan, on the other hand, exerts an almost sexual fascination on her. But the strict prophet brusquely rejects the princess. Salome asks her stepfather Herod for a perverse reward as a reward for her lascivious dance: the prophet's head in a silver bowl.
