Le nozze di Figaro / Die Hochzeit des Figaro

Opera buffa in four acts
Libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte based on the play La folle journée ou le Mariage de Figaro by Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais
In Italian with German and English surtitles

The wedding of the servant couple Figaro and Susanna is imminent and everything could be so beautiful - were it not for the love-lustful Count Almaviva, who has been stalking Susanna for a long time and is trying to delay the wedding, and Marcellina, who insists on a contract in which Figaro agrees once obliged to marry her. But through many intrigues and with the help of the offended Countess, Figaro and Susanna succeed in defeating Almaviva with his own art of seduction and in the end bringing all the legitimate couples together...
The first of the three Mozart-Da-Ponte operas invites the audience to engage in comedic intrigue while at the same time prompting them to reflect on the human twists and turns of love. In the theater play on display, director Johannes Erath begins this art of intrigue in the masquerade of the commedia dell'arte before leading it through time and various theatrical traditions into the modern age. The suppressed longings of the characters come to the fore in the ambiguous arias and duets about the facets of love, which Erath captures in effective images. And that makes it clear: Mozart's opera has lost none of its topicality to this day and is therefore rightly considered a milestone in operatic history.
