Die tote Stadt

Opera in three scenes Based loosely on Georges Rodenbach's novel »Bruges-la-Morte«
Libretto by Paul Schott

Premiered December 16, 2017

In German with German and English surtitles

After the death of his wife Marie, the grieving widower Paul lives lonely and withdrawn in the city of Bruges and practices a strange death cult around the deceased. But meeting the dancer Marietta turns his life upside down: the young woman becomes a mirror of his longings, onto which he projects the »return« of his deceased wife. Only after waking up from a nightmare, in which Paul commits a bloody act, can he arrive in reality. Can he go the way to a life free of psychological burdens? With his »Dead City«, which premiered simultaneously in Hamburg and Cologne in 1920, the »child prodigy« Erich Wolfgang Korngold became, alongside Richard Strauss, the most frequently performed opera composer in Germany in the 1920s. Director David Bösch tells Paul's journey into the self in a visually stunning and impressive way, during which the levels of dream and reality gradually blur.
