The magician
Conjurer »Magician» called the US composer John Corigliano his concert for drums and string orchestra. Each of the three movements is preceded by a cadence assigned to each of the three percussive types of instruments - the wood, metal and fur instruments. The soloist is the magician who brings these instruments to life by hitting or swiping. Corigliano also created a sort of keyboard made of wooden instruments, whose sounds of indefinite pitch are arranged according to their brightness and thus can produce melodies. "That's why the drums are so fantastic - it's not just a rhythmic instrument, but also a melodic sound tool", Grubinger enthuses about the combination of rhythm and flow of melody.
