Wagner: Influence and Inspiration
The two sides of viennese symphonic music.
Vienna: the two sides of the disk. One is devoted to the post-classicism of Franz Schubert. In this 8th Symphony, which he never finished, the composer of The Winter Journey laid the foundations of the great symphonic works of Romanticism. On the other side is Mahler's Song of the Earth, in which the human voice is treated as just another instrument of dramatic expressiveness. The text, by Chinese poet Li Tai-Po, lends the work a earthly quality, akin to the mystery of creation itself, thanks to the dialogues between the tenor and mezzosoprano and the orchestra.
