Verdi and his librettist Maffei focused on the family tragedy created at Schiller: An overpowering father has given all his love and attention to his son Karl, he has neglected the other, Franz. So the first became a self-loving daredevil, the second a bitter good-for-nothing. In this constellation, Franz's intrigues against Karl became effective: Karl, believing he had fallen into disfavour with his father, became a robber chief. His fiancee Amalia, who grew up like a sister in Maximilian's house, falls victim to the conflicts and rivalries of men. When Franz's machinations are finally revealed, a happy ending has become impossible. The plot inevitably leads to disaster ...
