UNQUALIFIED (URAUFFÜHRUNG) Helen Clare Kinney
“What qualifies me to indulge in my artistic vision and worldview for the public eye? What allows my voice to be heard?” These questions provide Helen Clare Kinney with the starting point for her debut choreography “Unqualified”. Its venue – the traditional opera house – becomes an arena for dance theatre in which she can humorously cross the boundaries between dancers and members of the audience.

AS IT LEAVES... (URAUFFÜHRUNG) Brice Asnar
With “As It Leaves …” Brice Asnar also presents himself as a choreographer with the Ballett am Rhein for the first time. To music by Max Richter he creates an intimate pas de deux on the theme of losing something one was very fond of and the ensuing process of emotional turmoil, oscillating between resistance and struggle, acceptance and letting go.

ROCOCO VARIATIONS (URAUFFÜHRUNG) So-Yeon Kim
By contrast So-Yeon Kim has been inspired to create a “real” ballet by Peter I. Tchaikovsky’s “Rococo Variations” for cello and orchestra: “Tchaikovsky’s theme was inspired by seven variations by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He composed such fluid, extravagant and playful music that I can think of nothing else but dancing”, the choreographer reveals.

OPUS 29 (URAUFFÜHRUNG) Michael Foster
“A journey into the darkness of the unconscious, of thoughts, fantasies, hopes and fears”, is how Michael Foster describes his “Opus 29”. His musical basis for this emotional investigation of our inner being is Sergei Rachmaninov’s symphonic poem “The Isle of the Dead”, inspired by a black and white reproduction of Arnold Böcklin’s painting of the same name – a shimmering atmosphere in shades of grey that Michael Foster will address in his third piece as a choreographer for the Ballett am Rhein.
