Synopsis: Isolde loves Tristan, and Tristan loves Isolde. A love with no alternative, no chance, because Isolde is to marry King Marke to seal the peace between Ireland and Kareol. Tristan accompanies the woman to Kareol, who vacillates between contempt and despair. "Chosen by me, lost to me," sings Isolde about Tristan, and further: "Death-doomed head! Heart doomed to die!' Love between the two only seems possible in death. Isolde's confidante Brangäne, however, administers a love potion instead of the death she has been asked for, and the fate of the two "devoted to the night" takes its course.
