Thésée

Tragédie lyrique in a prologue and five acts of
Jean Baptiste Lully

Libretto by Philippe Quinault

At the court of the French Sun King, all the arts available should come together to pay homage to the monarchy: in the tragédies lyriques, song, poetry, dance and spectacular scenery merged into a total work of art. For example, at the world premiere of Thésée, flying demons or an enchanted banquet were not only scenic highlights, but also an acoustically spectacular experience thanks to Jean-Baptiste Lully's colorful music. In addition to virtuoso trumpet fanfares, this varied score also offers the most intimate lyricism: an ideal piece for Christophe Rousset and his ensemble Les Talens Lyriques. The focus of the plot is the war hero Theseus, who is involved less in martial than in amorous conflicts with the princess Aigle and the sorceress Medea.
