Right now I was a shooter and now I'm a janitor in a theater.
Vienna in March 1848. In the city, the people rise up against the authorities and demand reforms. While the insurgents storm the Lower Austrian country house in Herrengasse, Ferdinand Raimund's magical fairy tale The Farmer as a Millionaire is being rehearsed in a small Viennese theater. But real events influence the work of the theater company. When even the Burgtheater had to stop its operations due to the revolution, the theater ensemble was faced with the decision: continue or not? The events are commented on by Adam Holzapfel, the pragmatic caretaker of the theater, who also works as a fusilier for the imperial soldiers and is therefore responsible for the executions of the insurgents.
"What happens when art and reality collide?" Against this thematic background, Peter Turrini designs his play It must be divorced and lets Ferdinand Raimund's theater world meet the 1848 revolution in Metternich's Vienna. In a captivating, humorous, but also thought-provoking way, the author explores whether his theater credo, "that there is a comedy inherent in every tragedy," can be maintained even under these circumstances.
