All the unhappiness in the world comes from the early risers; with their morning agility they make light of everything.

Two friends, both around 65, meet once a week in a restaurant called "To the Czech Embassy". They have known each other since they were young and went to boarding school together in a provincial town. Later they went to the big city, one became a bookseller, the other a lecturer in Romance studies. At times they lost sight of each other. They've been meeting again for some time now, every Friday.

They talk about times past, comment on current events, argue and laugh and produce lots of opinions. The lecturer becomes more and more radical and politically right-wing, the bookseller defends his social convictions, but loses himself more and more in melancholy views of the world.

Underneath all these mountains of language lies the drama - barely spoken, but always noticeable: the fear of getting older and losing meaning, of illness, separation and death. In this drama, the dramatic plays a secondary role, but only apparently.
