Der Himbeerpflücker

There was such blissful peace here,
a peace of God,
you just have
to earning
thought, and
now comes on
once one
therefore with
eight thousend
dead -

In the 1960s, the rich mayor and innkeeper Steisshäuptl rules in fictional Bad Brauning. The former local group leader owes his wealth to the embezzlement of a box of dental gold from a nearby concentration camp, which his house servant Zagl had taken over for safekeeping on behalf of the so-called "raspberry picker". Zagl now believes that he has recognized the stranger who stayed at the inn. Steisshäuptl is beside himself: Has the raspberry picker, long thought dead, come to get the gold? And unrest also spreads among the other notables, they turn away from Steisshäuptl and outdo each other in pandering to the stranger, who can only be happy with that - but for a completely different reason than the people of Bad Brauningen had in mind.

Fritz Hochwälder, who was at risk in two respects as a socialist and a Jew, managed to escape to Switzerland in 1938, where he began to pursue his literary work. In his apt and highly comical satire The Raspberry Picker, he takes stock of the historical self-righteousness and inertia in coming to terms with post-war Austria.

Subject to change.
