In his pathogenic hunger for the ultimate kick, his addiction to the uninterrupted movement of time and his negation of all limits, Faust is paradigmatic for the hubris of the human being who threatens to lose himself in the self-unleashed storm of events. The pact with Mephisto is the starting point for fleeing into the future, the promise is immortality. Faust, thirsting for catastrophe and mistaking it for promises of salvation, travels to the ends of civilization where the air tastes of blood and the eye freezes.
