Der Untergang des Hauses Usher

German, English and Hungarian. With English and German surtitles.

Edgar Allan Poe dedicated his work to "those who feel rather than think, the dreamers and those who believe in dreams as the only realities...". Poe writes about schizophrenic daydreamers and oversensitive murderers, about compulsive lovers and obsessive hysterics. His heroines lure us to places of fear and terror, to the terra incognita between life and death. THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER is considered the epitome of Poean horror. Isolated from society, Roderik Usher, a melancholic spirit, devotes himself solely to poetry and music with his dearly beloved twin sister Madeline. A childhood friend visits their property and notices a crack in the walls when he arrives. He witnesses the house's decline on a stormy night, which is inextricably linked to the mental collapse of its tormented occupant.

Barbara Frey, director, musician and since this year Artistic Director of the Ruhrtriennale, embarks on a multilingual and musical journey into the thought cosmos of the great American catastrophe chronicler with HAUS USHER and other stories, together with an ensemble of actors and musicians from London, Budapest and Vienna.
