Der Selbstmörder

It all begins with the nocturnal longing for liver sausage. The unemployed petty bourgeois Semjon Semjonowitsch wakes up his wife Masha, who indignantly rejects his sleepy cravings for meat. The marital quarrel quickly escalates, Semjon Semjonowitsch leaves the marital bed hurt and can no longer be found in the dark residential complex.

Masha begins to worry, and her angry mother Serafima fuels her fear: Surely Semyon won't want to kill himself - out of shame at being a "person without salary"? It doesn't take long for the whole town to know: Semjon Semjonowitsch wants to take his own life. As a potential dead person, however, his social value increases rapidly. Suddenly everyone wanted to dictate the reason for his martyr's death personally in his farewell letter - of course strictly in the interests of his own group: the intellectuals, the Orthodox Church, the sausage industry. Semjon wallows in the unaccustomed attention, gets a pistol and gratefully accepts the role of the suicide. However, he has only one problem: In reality, he lacks the courage to follow his words with deeds. But the company has already set a deadline for him: Tomorrow at 12 noon it should be ready.

It is reported of Stanislawski that he had to break off a rehearsal for SUICIDE (1928) because of a fit of laughter. Maxim Gorky called Nikolai Erdman "the new Gogol". THE SUICIDE is one of the great comedies of the 20th century. With unique situation comedy, Erdman mercilessly dissects the ruthlessness of human greed. The directing duo Jordan / Koppelmann is working in Vienna for the first time after its brilliant comedy productions at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg and at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus.
