Bunbury - Schedule, Program & Tickets

Bunbury

The two dandies Algernon and Jack love the double life. In order to reconcile vice and pleasure with their social obligations, both of them have made up lies: Algernon invents a sick friend named Bunbury so that he can visit him in the country as often as possible, and Jack pretends to take care of his brother Ernst having to come to town regularly.

Jack falls in love with Algernon's cousin Gwendolen and proposes marriage to her. She is obsessed with marrying someone named Ernst. Algernon claims to be Jack's brother Ernst. He falls in love with Cecily. She also considers the name Ernst to be an absolutely necessary prerequisite for her future husband... From now on, a wild comedy about ambiguity in language, seriousness, truth and lies takes its course.

First performed in London in 1895, this simultaneously absurdly funny and bitterly angry reckoning with hypocrisy, superficiality and a certain flattening of the character became a classic. The Italian actor, director and author Antonio Latella has realized numerous international productions and was director of the Venice Theater Biennale from 2016 to 2020.
