Like no other work, the three-act opera IL TRITTICO, premiered in 1918, reflects Puccini's search for new musical theatrical forms: In three pieces with different colors and nuances, he once again brought to the stage what Italian opera could be in those years. In a concentrated version, the second and third parts of the triptych now return to the Deutsche Oper stage in Karabulut's vibrant production: SUOR ANGELICA, a piece with an all-female cast, is a solitary work in opera history, revolving around questions of life and death and the possibilities in between. In her feminist interpretation, Karabulut questions the possibilities of (female) self-determination within a closed system. GIANNI SCHICCHI, on the other hand, in the tradition of commedia dell'arte, places the human being at the center as a gambler and avaricious deceiver. With her keen sense of timing and a captivating ensemble, Karabulut reveals the bizarre depths of a hypocritical family that gathers once again around the deathbed of the family patriarch.
About the Production
Director Pınar Karabulut is well known to the house for her spectacular production of Turnage's modern Oedipus opera GREEK on the parking deck of the Deutsche Oper Berlin. The young director has received numerous awards and was invited to the 2021 Berlin Theatertreffen to direct a production at the Munich Kammerspiele. With IL TRITTICO, she now presents herself in the main house of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, staging the three operas as a world theater of varying colors and temperatures on a rotating revolving stage.
