Stephen, the king - Premiere
Levente Szörényi – Levente Gyöngyösi
Stephen, the king
Rock-opera production in Hungarian, with Hungarian and English surtitles
World premiere of the classic Hungarian rock-opera as arranged for operatic voices and symphony orchestra
Far and away the most successful piece in the history of Hungarian rock operas and musicals, Stephen, the King is permeated with the kind of thinking that is characteristic of classical operas. To mark the 75th birthday of its composer, Levente Szörényi, on the Day of National Unity, the Opera will experiment with a true novelty: to stage Stephen, the King with an operatic score and performed by opera singers. With the work thus completely freed of any need for amplification, the new riches it has to offer will be able to emerge in the atmosphere of Hungary’s largest theatre space: the Erkel Theatre. The work of composer Levente Gyöngyösi on this production is a tribute to Szörényi’s life and career.
