Mauthausen Concentration Camp Memorial Tour from Vienna - Schedule, Program & Tickets

Mauthausen Concentration Camp Memorial Tour from Vienna

From 1938 to 1945, the Mauthausen concentration camp was the center of a system of more than 40 subcamps and the central location of political, social, racist and anti-Semitic persecution by the Nazi regime on Austrian territory. Of the approximately 190,000 people imprisoned here, at least 90,000 were killed.

The task of the memorial is to anchor the history of the Mauthausen concentration camp and its subcamps, the memory of their victims and the responsibility of the perpetrators and bystanders in the public consciousness. At the same time, it contributes to promoting public engagement with history in the light of its significance for the present and future. That is why it researches and documents the history of the Mauthausen concentration camp and its subcamps and enables visitors to get closer to the concentration camp history through exhibitions, educational programs and events.

The aim is to highlight comparable developments, tendencies and processes in the present and to raise awareness of National Socialist re-activation, anti-Semitism, racism, discrimination against minorities and hostility to democracy.

The Mauthausen Concentration Camp Memorial is therefore a former crime scene, memorial site, cemetery for thousands of people murdered here and a place for historical and political education.
