Simon Boccanegra - Schedule, Program & Tickets
Simon Boccanegra
Opera in two parts, a prologue and three acts, in Italian, with Hungarian and English surtitles
Verdi's Simon Boccanegra will play at the Müpa Budapest this January, this time in a concert production by the Hungarian State Opera.
"Such intimate and finely crafted music is not only invaluable, it cannot even begin to be understood," is how a contemporary critic described Giuseppe Verdi's musical drama. Giuseppe Verdi takes the audience back to 14th-century Geneva with Simon Boccanegra, a remarkably complicated and monumental musical drama about family and politics. The opera is based on motifs that Verdi had developed earlier. It encompasses the themes of the lost child, generational conflict, friendship and betrayal. Following the Italian operatic tradition from Rossini to Puccini, the composer showed human passions and conflicts in a political setting. The story of the Doge of Genoa, a work condemning ill-fated political struggles and urging friendship within the Italian nation, has been conquering the world's opera stages since 1881.
