1st elevator
Siegfried grew up in the forest with Mime, the blacksmith. When he investigates his parents, Mime tells him about Siegfried's mother, who died giving birth to him and left only the broken Notung sword that his father carried in the last battle. When Siegfried is once again out and about in the forest, a wanderer appears, in whom one recognizes Wotan, and challenges Mime to a knowledge bet, which he loses. Mime also learns from the wanderer that only those who do not know fear can reforge the sword Notung. Mime knows that this person is Siegfried. Mime promises Siegfried that he will learn to fear by fighting the dragon Fafner. He secretly hopes to obtain the Nibelungen ring and the Nibelungen hoard, which Fafner keeps, through Siegfried. Siegfried immediately succeeds in forging the Notung sword.
2nd elevator
Mime's brother Alberich keeps watch in front of the dragon's cave. The wanderer who visits him announces the arrival of Mimes and Siegfried. Alberich's attempt to persuade Fafner to hand over the ring fails. Siegfried kills Fafner after a short fight. After the dragon's blood has wet Siegfried's mouth, he understands the language of the birds. A forest bird draws Siegfried's attention to Ring and Hoard. He kills the Mime, who is trying to kill Siegfried, with the sword Notung and follows the forest bird, which tells him about Brünnhilde asleep.
3rd elevator
The Wanderer wakes Erda and tells her that he wants to abdicate in favor of young Siegfried. But the approaching Siegfried treats the wanderer little differently than he did mime before. He smashes the hiker's spear, on which Siegfried's father Siegmund's sword once broke, and makes his way to a rock surrounded by fire. There he finds the sleeping Brünnhilde, whom he wakes up. Both awake in love for each other.
