Semiramide

An outstanding tandem of singers on the Liceu's stage: Joyce DiDonato and Levy Sekgapane
Semiramide, based on a play by Voltaire, was composed between Zelmira and Il viaggio a Reims. It is one of the last examples of opera seria and provides the clearest illustration – along with Tancredi – of how Rossini's dramas evolved towards Romantic bel canto despite their eminently classical themes.

First staged at La Fenice in Venice, Semiramide was Rossini's farewell to Italian opera houses prior to moving to Paris, where he lived until he died.

Sharing the stage for this concert version will be two of the most fascinating singers on today's international opera scene: the American mezzosoprano Joyce DiDonato and the tenor Levy Sekgapane
