Salome - Premiere

Music drama by Richard Strauss

In German with German surtitles

The king's daughter Salome is tired of the decadence and amorality of those around her. She finds an alternative to this in the chastity of the prophet Jochanaan, who is being held captive in a cistern by her stepfather Herod, and who casts a spell over her with auratic speeches. Jochanaan's rejection increases her fascination to ecstasy: Salome wants to kiss him. When Herod, whom she hates, promises his stepdaughter everything she wants in exchange for a dance, Salome is determined. She agrees, but demands a high price for it: the head of the prophet.

Luc Bondy's timeless production is a director's classic of the late 20th century: After its premiere at the Salzburg Festival in 1992, it was praised by critics as a "highly sublime family chamber play" that "makes this work itself a hero". at the Royal Opera House in London, at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels and at La Scala in Milan. Under the musical direction of music director Omer Meir Wellber, Luc Bondy's production is now also having its Vienna premiere.
