Salome - Schedule, Program & Tickets
Salome
Musical drama in one act in German with Hungarian and English surtitles
Richard Strauss based his biblically themed opera Salome from 1893 on Oscar Wilde's play of the same name. Strauss's re-conception of this poetic - and at the time scandalously erotic - work, which was written in French while the Irish playwright was in exile in France, takes everything to extremes. With a great sense of drama, the composer created an unstoppable and extraordinarily weighty musical drama that was at the same time not free from sarcasm. For the first time in history, the backdrops are reconstructed rooms, copied from the original Herod's palace of Machaerus in modern Jordan, uncovered during excavations led by the Hungarian antiquity researcher Győző Vörös.
