Berlioz's dramatic symphony "Roméo et Juliette", premiered on 24 November 1839 at the Paris Conservatory, is one of the most important and cross-border symphonic works of the 19th century. Born a few years after Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in D minor, op. 125, it became groundbreaking for composers such as Gustav Mahler, whose great vocal symphonies would not have been possible without the Berliozian extension of the formal musical language, but also for Richard Wagner, the third the three performances from the premiere series of the "Symphonie dramatique" in Paris witnessed. He, who was otherwise embarrassed by words, was at first speechless: "I was only ear for things that I had no idea and which I now had to explain myself." He was particularly impressed by the "fantastic daring and sharp precision ", but also" the most daring combinations "of the work, which oscillates between great symphony, cantata, ballet music and opera. More than 20 years later he sent Berlioz the first edition of his score of TRISTAN AND ISOLDE with the dedication: "Au cher et grand auteur de Roméo et Juliette".

With her staging of "Roméo et Juliette" (2007), Sasha Waltz turns to one of the most moving love stories in world literature. The story of unfortunate lovers, whose families are enemies and whose death brings insight and reconciliation, is one of Shakespeare's most famous works. This dark tragedy inspired Hector Berlioz to compose the dramatic symphony "Roméo et Juliette" for three soloists, two great choirs and orchestras. The Opéra National de Paris and the ballet commissioned Sasha Waltz with the choreography.

After its resumption in the spring of 2012 at the Opéra National de Paris, "Roméo et Juliette" was included in the repertoire of the Milan Scala in the fall of 2012.

In April 2015, "Roméo et Juliette" as a coproduction of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Milan Scala and Sasha Waltz & Guests finally celebrates its premiere in Berlin. Here "Roméo et Juliette" is danced for the first time by the dancers of the company Sasha Waltz & Guests, with whom Sasha Waltz created her third choreographic opera after "Dido & Aeneas" 2005 and "Medea" 2007 in Berlin, before she started the work the ballet ensembles in Paris and Milan rendered.
