Romeo and Juliet

Ballet in three acts

“There's an old, slightly cynical saying in the theater that when you run out of ideas, produce a Shakespearean work.” As the ballet's choreographer László Seregi put it at the time of the premiere. However, Romeo and Juliet would thoroughly debunk the self-mockery in this joke and become one of Hungary's most famous ballet classics. Seregi's spectacular and colorful piece made no secret of being inspired by Zeffirelli. He fundamentally reformed traditional ballet storytelling by conceiving a full-blooded Renaissance tale for the stage: attention to minute movements, coupled with a superb performance in showing elaborate situations and picturesque landscapes, won over audiences at home and abroad. The shine of the work has not faded since then: popularity and success have remained unbroken for decades.
