Rodelinda Regina de’ Langobardi

Dramma per musica in three acts
Libretto by Nicola Francesco Haym

All good things come in threes: At the end of his annus mirabilis in 1724/25, Georg Friedrich Handel succeeded in composing a third work after Giulio Cesare in Egitto and Tamerlano, which can be counted among the best he ever wrote for the stage. In January 1725, Rodelinda had its celebrated premiere at the King's Theatre in London. Even during Handel's lifetime, there were frequent revivals, and finally in 1920, with a performance of Rodelinda at the first Handel Festival in Göttingen, the modern Handel Renaissance was initiated. The plot centers on a strong woman who will stop at nothing to save her husband - a real prima donna role, which is now played in Vienna by Karina Gauvin. Raffaele Pe, who can also be seen in Gasparini's Ambleto this season, not only takes on the role of the male lead actor, but also that of the conductor and leads his ensemble La Lira di Orfeo.
