Listen to a concert on the new giant organ in St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna! Powerful sounds from more than 12,000 pipes fill one of the most beautiful church rooms in the world on one of the largest organ systems in Europe. Top-class organists offer a wide-ranging program from Bach to Reger to highlights of organ music. The console is located centrally in the central nave - you can therefore immediately follow the virtuoso performances on the five manuals. Below you will find all information about the dates, organists and their program. A comprehensive sound experience awaits you.

The giant organ is part of the organ landscape of St. Stephen's Cathedral, which, with its more than 12,000 pipes, five manuals and 130 registers, is one of the largest organ systems in Europe. Even though the giant organ is truly enormous, its name does not refer to the size of the instrument, but rather comes from the main portal of St. Stephen's Cathedral underneath, the Giant's Gate. The giant organ and the choir organ in the side aisle can be played together from the mobile general console.

During the devastating cathedral fire in April 1945, the old giant organ (90 registers) built by Eberhard Walcker from 1886 burned in the west gallery of St. Stephen's Cathedral. In 1960, the new giant organ (125 registers), built by the Viennese organ builder Johann M. Kaufmann, was consecrated at this location. but it only played for around 35 years and was then out of operation as a silent wreck for a long time. This instrument was completely redesigned by Rieger Orgelbau in 2017-2020 using old pipes and retaining the appearance of 1960 and equipped with new technology.
