Rappresentatione di Anima et di Corpo - Schedule, Program & Tickets
Rappresentatione di Anima et di Corpo
Rappresentatione per recitar cantando in a preface and three acts (1600)
Music by Emilio de 'Cavalieri
Text by Agostino Manni with Dorisio Isorelli
In Italian with German surtitles
New production of the Theater an der Wien
The beginning of the opera poses existential questions: How should one live properly? Why are people so attached to life? What is good about this existence on earth? Its beauty is only an appearance, it is full of vanity, complaints and dangers. Since the eyes of the people are clouded by sin, a spectacle should show them that only the turn to God's love can make happy. At the beginning of the game, TEMPO warns that the time, the Last Judgment is near, one must turn one's heart to God. INTELLETTO, the mind, is already convinced of this; CORPO and ANIMA, body and soul, are not yet in agreement. ANIMA cannot find what it longs for in the world, while CORPO cannot get rid of the suspicion that worldly pleasures could bring satisfaction. When ANIMA insists on striving after God, the choir praises God's goodness to consolidate their view. CORPO now agrees to ANIMA. However, their unity is still being tested. CONSIGLIO, the good advice, is at your side. PIACERE, pleasure, describes the beauty of nature and love and tempts CORPO and ANIMA with it. CORPO almost fell for it, but ANIMA stood firm. As CORPO grumbles, ANIMA asks the sky. Through an echo, a heavenly voice confirms ANIMA's attitude. A guardian angel appears for further strengthening, because now MONDO, the world, confronts them personally and promises splendor and wealth. CORPO wants to submit to it, even ANIMA is thinking of a compromise between the world and God, when the Guardian Angel intervenes to warn. The world then sends VITA MONDANA, worldly life, with all its tempting loveliness to the meeting. But beneath the outer splendor of the world and worldly life there is miserable ugliness. When this is revealed, CORPO finally turns to God. CORPO and ANIMA are invited to heaven as role models for people, where their suffering and happiness are directly revealed to them once again when the damned and the blessed are questioned. The performance ends with a festival to praise God.
