Pompeo Magno

DR. AMMA PER MUSICA IN THREE ACTS
LIBRETTO BY NICOLÒ MINATO

Pompeo Magno by Francesco Cavalli, the most important Italian opera composer of the generation after Claudio Monteverdi, alongside Antonio Cesti, is a brilliant play of confusion and intrigue. The work centers on the Roman general Gnaeus Pompeius (Pompeo Magno), who returns victorious to Rome after his third conquest. But at the Roman court, behind closed doors and without loud war cries, secret battles between love, desire, betrayal, and jealousy are waged. Premiered in 1666 at the Venetian Teatro San Salvatore, Pompeo Magno is a moral portrait of a decadent society in which all elements of Venetian musical theater are interwoven into a dense and multifaceted drama. Conductor Leonardo García Alarcón and his Capella Mediterranea have made a name for themselves as interpreters of Cavalli's operas for many years and now bring Pompeo Magno to the MusikTheater an der Wien with renowned singers such as Max Emanuel Cencic, Valer Sabadus, and Mariana Flores.
