Tchaikovsky's second most popular opera after EUGEN ONEGIN is particularly impressive because of its sheer size: the atmosphere in PIQUE DAME skillfully changes from large, representative choral and ensemble opera to psychological chamber drama scenes. The glamor of a fashionable elite meets the misery of the outlaw proletariat. For Pyotr and Modest Tchaikovsky, Pushkin's short novella became the starting point for a psychogram of the two main characters, Hermann and Lisa, who are connected in their fatalistic hopelessness and their failed striving for freedom. The outsider Hermann is unhappily in love with the unattainable Lisa, who comes from better circles. The only way out seems to be a mysterious card secret that Lisa's aunt, the old countess, is guarding. But when Hermann tries to wrest the secret from the Countess, she dies. However, she reveals the combination of cards to him in a dream. Reality and delusion can now hardly be distinguished for Hermann. Instead of starting a new life with Lisa, he rushes back to the gaming tables.
