The fisherman Peter Grimes is avoided in his village. He is a closed outsider who has had an apprentice boy dead for the second time. The village community suspects Grimes could be responsible for these deaths. You can't prove anything to him during an investigation, but he is advised to hire an adult as an assistant in the future. Only the teacher Ellen Orford stands by Grimes. The former captain Balstrode recommends that he marry Ellen so that the talk would end, but the fisherman evades, first he wants to earn money and a reputation. In order to cope with all the work, he is looking for a boy as an apprentice again. As always, the pharmacist Keene organizes one from the poor house for him. Carter Hobson initially refuses to bring a new victim to Grimes. Only when Ellen is ready to pick up the boy does he take the job. From now on, Grimes is under even closer scrutiny. A few weeks later on a Sunday in front of the church, Ellen noticed a bruise on the boy. When she confronts Grimes about it, she gets into an argument with him. Grimes takes the boy and wants to go fishing with him. But the villagers noticed after the service that something was wrong again with Grimes and his apprentice. They band together to bring Grimes to reason. Just as Grimes and the boy are getting ready to drive out, he hears the angry citizens. He escapes with the boy in the direction of the boat, but in the panic the boy slips on the rocks. When the citizens reach the hut, it is empty. Days later, Ellen and Balstrode discover the boy's sweater. Now the villagers are convinced that Grimes must have committed another murder and go again to make him pay for his crimes. Ellen and Balstrode find Grimes in front of the angry mob, but he is confused and does not hear them. Desperately he realized that he could never succeed in living the way he had to and wants to. Finally, Balstrode gives Grimes one last piece of advice: he should go out to sea and submerge himself there. When one hears in the village that a boat has sunk, life goes on again undisturbed.
