Otello

Dramma lirico in four acts libretto by Arrigo Boito after William Shakespeare's tragedy »Othello, the Moor of Venice«
In Italian with German and English surtitles

In 1887 the composer Giuseppe Verdi created »Otello«, a new opera whose originality already enraptured the audience and which is still one of his most captivating works, both in terms of music and content. Verdi's through-composed Dramma lirico grippingly traces Shakespeare's drama of the same name, which drives the protagonist further and further into the abyss: Otello, commander of the Venetian fleet, defying all forces of nature, returns to Cyprus and announces victory over the Ottomans there. Only his ensign Jago does not join in the general jubilation, because he is planning a perfidious revenge plot against Otello, which is supposed to turn his life into a dark tragedy. Vincent Boussard's production, a co-production with the Salzburg Easter Festival, shows the devastating maelstrom that Otello finds himself in in impressive images. The costume design was created by fashion designer Christian Lacroix.
