Joseph Haydn was the most famous composer in Europe during his lifetime. As Kapellmeister of Prince Esterházy he spent a lot, sometimes too much time for his taste in his country estate Eszterháza, but he was an internationally networked artist. With the exception of his first, lost opera, and his last, unlisted Orpheus and Eurydice version, L’anima del filosofo, Haydn wrote all of his operas for the Eszterházy Theater, which had been a regular opera since 1776. The prince also maintained an ensemble with dedicated singers of the highest quality. As Kapellmeister, Haydn took care of other works and between 1776 and 1790, the year Prince Nikolaus died, Haydn conducted a performance almost every third day.
