Opera gala with award ceremony

Winner: stage and costume designer Johannes Leiacker

With the »Phoenix Award – from the founder and sponsor of the Semperoper Senator h.c. Rudi Häussler« the foundation honors outstanding artistic personalities who belong to the Semperoper or are closely associated with it. Promoting artistic excellence and diversity in the traditional Saxon State Opera is an important concern of the foundation. The prize, which has been awarded since 1993, is intended to strengthen and increase the worldwide reputation of the Semperoper in a special way. In recent years, Christian Thielemann, Evelyn Herlitzius, Georg Zeppenfeld, the Semperoper Ballet, Jón Vallejo and Omer Meir Wellber, among others, have received the Foundation Prize.

This year the prize goes to the renowned stage and costume designer Johannes Leiacker, who has been closely associated with the Semperoper for over 25 years. The artist from Landshut is one of the most important contemporary outfitters and works with directors such as Peter Konwitschny, Dietrich W. Hilsdorf, Christof Loy and Guy Joosten. Johannes Leiacker has twice received the coveted award for set designer of the year: in 2009 for his set design for "Tosca" in the production by Philipp Himmelmann at the Bregenz Festival (which was also the setting for a "James Bond" film with Daniel Craig) and in 2018 for the room for Brigitte Fassbaender's production of Richard Strauss' »Capriccio« at the Frankfurt Opera.

With his now eleven productions, he has had a decisive influence on the aesthetic image of the Semperoper Dresden. In the current season, stage designs and sets by Johannes Leiacker can be seen in the new production of Vincenzo Bellini's »La sonnambula«, directed by Rolando Villazón, and in the repertoire performances of »Les Huguenots/Die Hugenotten« (2019), »Norma« ( 2021) and »Rusalka« (2022).

The prize will be awarded as part of a festive opera gala on November 22, 2022 with the ensemble of the Semperoper accompanied by the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden.

Furthermore, this year the Semperoper Foundation is again awarding the "Curt-Taucher-Förderpreis" to a highly talented young artist and would like to recognize the achievements to date and provide motivation for a further career.
