Operetta by Jacques Offenbach

In German with German surtitles

Offenbach has none of the sublime world of myths of earlier settings. In his Orpheus in the Underworld, premiered in 1858 in the Paris theater of the "Bouffes-Parisiens", we experience Orpheus as a boring music teacher and Eurydice as his annoyed wife. When Eurydice goes to hell, nothing could please her husband more! Were it not for public opinion, which compels Orpheus to reclaim his wife from Jupiter, the father of the gods, in Olympus. Bored with nectar and ambrosia, the whole family of gods comes to the underworld with Orpheus. In Offenbach's work, which is considered the first operetta in history, one can laugh about dreary marriages as well as about screwed up gods and a party-addicted underworld.

This comedic masterpiece is directed by Spymonkey, Britain's leading physical comedy company. With Orpheus in the Underworld, the group presents their first production at an opera house. "Orpheus in the Underworld fits perfectly with our comedic signature," said Toby Park, one of the Artistic Directors. “As a parody of antiquity and a travesty of myths, the play presents a world that everyone knows and intelligently turns it upside down. This is exactly how our performative language and our form of comedy work!” The ensemble of the Volksoper unfolds its true clown potential in this production.
