My Fair Lady

A piece with music by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill

In German language

A piece with music in a prelude and eight scenes
based on John Gay's The Beggar's Opera
by Bertolt Brecht (lyrics) and Kurt Weill (music)
with the collaboration of Elisabeth Hauptmann

Who cheats best wins: crook boss Macheath and beggar king Peachum (both entrepreneurs!) put on a shabby competition at its finest. However, Peachum's daughter Polly does not see herself as investment capital and marries Macheath for love. The whore Jenny takes revenge with her means. But a world that only rewards the best crooks can't be a good one. The Threepenny Opera ruthlessly reveals what audiences don't want to see: that we are all the ones supporting this evil.

In 1928 it was already cold in the bourgeois world, which The Threepenny Opera wanted to show its wickedness in an unadorned way. The gutter is foil, the dirty shirt collar is just color. And isn't it getting colder? Maurice Lenhard and his team present this classic as a fight for survival in a cold world: if you don't have a thick skin, it's best to pack up as much as possible against the frost in this reading.

The Threepenny Opera is the first contribution to the Volksoper Wien's new Manifesto series. Under this title, young and experienced theater makers are invited to think aloud about how and why making music theater. At the end of the day, each artistic team will leave behind a new production and a manifesto that we will continue to build on.
