The triumph of drag queens at the Volksoper began as early as 1991, when nightclub star Zaza – Albin in his middle-class life – first entered the stage together with his partner George in La Cage aux Folles: “I am what I am, and what I am is unusual.” The performances were stormed, the play was restaged by Melissa King in 2021/22.
Albin aka Zaza is the star of a nightclub in Saint-Tropez, Georges owns it. Together they are a charming loving couple. Then Georges' son appears from an earlier "misstep" and tells his father that he wants to marry the daughter of an arch-conservative provincial politician. Misunderstandings and disguises, but also an entertaining, happy ending are inevitable.
