Three decades after Sally and Phyllis were hired as showgirls in the “Follies” revue, they visit their former place of work at a big gala. Here they also met their two husbands, Buddy and Benjamin, who accompanied them to the reunion with former colleagues and companions. The guests, who are surprisingly young at heart, reminisce: not only about stage successes, but also about their respective lives. But the party is also the scene of everyday relationship problems: the two couples face long-suppressed truths and ultimately have to set the course for their future.

Follies, premiered in New York in 1971, marks the beginning of Stephen Sondheim's twenty-year main creative period. The work deals with growing older and looking back at one's own, naive youth.
