Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor

Comic-fantastic opera by Otto Nicolai

In German with German surtitles

At the same time, Mrs. Fluth and Mrs. Reich, two married ladies, receive love letters from the impoverished nobleman Falstaff. You decide to teach him a lesson. Three gentlemen want to marry Anna, Frau Reich's daughter: Dr. Cajus, a pretty French boy, is her mother's favourite, but her father prefers the shy squire Sparlich, and Anna herself is in love with the penniless Fenton. Material enough for innumerable complications and entanglements.

More than 40 years before Verdi, Otto Nicolai and librettist Salomon Hermann Mosenthal used Shakespeare's play The Merry Wives of Windsor for their comic-fantastic opera. Did they have a romantic comedy in mind, or is there an influence of the revolutionary movements of 1848? Confident bourgeois women taking on the aristocracy?

In any case, if failed ambition is seen as one of the mainsprings of drama, The Merry Wives of Windsor provides the best example. And in this case it is not gods or fate that let ambition fail, it is women who reduce male ambition to nothing but empty words. The direction of this work is in the hands of top-class Dutch director Nina Spijkers, who has already critically read numerous theater classics and will work with set designer and Tony Award-winner Rae Smith for her first work at the Volksoper. "I'm attracted to stories in which women form a strong community," says Spijkers about her interest in Nicolai's opera.
