Die Dubarry

Operetta by Carl Millöcker / Theo Mackeben

In German language

In biographical stages, Dubarry tells the social ascent of the working-class girl Jeanne Beçu to become the wealthy mistress of Louis XV. and still raises current questions: What losses does it experience on the way up and how far does it corrupt itself? When Jeanne is faced with the choice between the romantic love affair with the artist René and the possibility of becoming the king's mistress, it is not only a decision between two men, but also between two completely different concepts of life.

Theo Mackeben's arrangement at the end of the 1920s casts a new light on Countess Dubarry, composed by Carl Millöcker in 1879. Based on the historical Jeanne Beçu, Mackeben's librettists tell the story of a strong female character who goes her own way. The lyrics and music of the new version, entitled Die Dubarry, were precisely designed for the Jewish-Hungarian soprano Gitta Alpár, who had to go into exile during the Nazi era, while Theo Mackeben wrote music for entertainment and propaganda films.

From today's perspective, how do we look at the female role models that are made available to the title character? Are we still satisfied with the choice between game character and string puller? And as beautiful as it may be musically, do we still unreservedly agree to an alcoholic intoned “Cherchez la femme”?

In order to question attributions of femininity over the course of time, director Jan Philipp Gloger and his artistic team have invented a theatrical journey through time for the new production of this work over four centuries, which in large pictures takes us from our present to the France of Louis XV. returns.
