Among the most unusual rediscoveries of recent years are the compositions by Agostino Steffani, born in 1654, composer and papal diplomat, who knew how to combine different musical styles at the highest level a generation before George Frideric Handel. La lotta d'Ercole con Acheloo, composed in 1689 for the newly opened court theater of the Elector of Hanover, describes the fight between Alcide (Hercules) and the river god Acheloo for the love of the beautiful Deianira. In addition to the soprano Anna Prohaska, three of the most important countertenors of our time, who could not be more different, enter this musical battle: Xavier Sabata, Terry Wey and Philipp Mathmann.
